Lesley Thomson, who sings alto in the GSA Choir, looks forward to tomorrow’s Composeher world premiere concert.
Composeher, for me, is what I imagine it’s like to train for your first marathon. You start with the vision of completing the 26.2 mile course and anticipate the excitement of crossing the line and being presented with your marathon medal. But before that there are months of intensive training. There are good and bad weeks, moments of euphoria as you break through a barrier and weeks of frustration and disappointment when things don’t go to plan.
But, eventually things come together. You find your pace, your body is used to the challenges and your brain has switched from ‘Can I?’ to ‘Yes I can.’
Who knew singing in an amateur, non-auditioned choir would also bring these challenges?
With Composeher the finishing line is in sight and the prospect of the world premiere concert tomorrow is exciting and, perhaps, just a little bit daunting. Those once unfamiliar notes on the page have become our friends and we are looking forward to introducing them to our audience at Glasgow’s City Halls.
The Composeher compositions take us on a journey that is thrilling, magical, exciting and, at times, deeply moving. Our audience is in for a unique experience and we are thrilled that most of the composers and many of the lyricists will be with us to share this moment.
I know everyone at the GSA Choir feels honoured to have been given such wonderful work to perform and we feel a huge degree of responsibility to make each piece sound the way the composers and their lyricists imagined it. Thank you – just one more mile to go until we cross the finishing line!
